Spider Control

Spider Pest Control & Extermination

How to get rid of Spiders?

Spiders are generally a beneficial creature to have on your property because they help maintain the populations of other pests. That being said, there are plenty of people who would prefer to not have spiders around. There are a couple species in California, like black widows and brown recluses, which are potentially dangerous to humans. That said, they generally keep their distance and only bite if threatened. If you have seen signs of spiders or their cobwebs, this could indicate a larger bug problem because spiders will establish their webs where food sources are available. Call All in One Pest Control today to schedule a spider inspection to see where spiders are and the best way to treat them.

What Attracts Spiders?

Spiders generally come into a home in search of one of 3 things: food, shelter, or a mate. Poor weather outside will generally prompt spider’s prey to move inside which inevitably draws the spiders inside as well. This leads spiders to each other which increases the likelihood of mating. Be prepared for increased pest and spider activity shortly after rain or cold weather warming up.

Where Do You Find Spiders?

Spiders can be found just about anywhere spider webs exist. They prefer to find areas that remain undisturbed or out of reach so their webs can stay intact. Spiders will migrate to high ceiling corners to stay as protected as possible while spinning their web. Others will find undisturbed areas like crawl spaces, attics, basements, and garages to occupy.

Signs of Spiders

Signs of spiders include:

-         Active or dead spiders

-         Spider webs

-         Empty egg sacks spun form spider silk

Lots of flying insects is also another good indicator that you might have a spider problem. Spiders will spin their webs where it is most likely going to catch that spider its dinner. Allowing a flying pest problem to get out of hand will invite a spider infestation in no time.

Spider Lifespan

A spider’s lifespan really depends on the species with species like black widows living up to 3 years and barn funnel weavers living up to 7 years in optimal conditions. Tarantulas have one of the longest lifespans and have been known to live beyond 20 years old. It is important to know that most spiders can lay close to 20 eggs sacs in their lifetime with each sac containing up to 250 eggs. This means that most spiders can lay several egg sacs a year resulting in spider population spikes without proper treatment.

Types of Spiders

The primary types of spiders that are found in California include:

Black Widow – Recognized by the shiny black exterior with a red hourglass symbol displayed prominently on its back. This spider is venomous and can deliver a painful bite that can cause severe distress and may require medical attention.

Brown Recluse – These are another extremely venomous spider found in California. Their venom causes human tissue to die so it is important to seek medical attention if bitten. That being said, seeing these are a little rarer because they prefer to remain hidden. They are easily identified by the violin shape found on their bodies.

Wolf Spider – Wolf spiders are known for hunting their prey and do not spin webs to catch their food. They stay low on the ground and will chase and pounce on the bugs they eat.

House Spider – These small spiders are generally the ones that you find inside your home. They are brown or black and sometimes have different patterns on their bodies.

Daddy Long Legs – These spiders have extremely long and thin legs. They are extremely venomous but luckily their teeth are not big enough to harm humans.

How to Prevent Spiders?

Effective spider control starts with implementing prevention strategies designed to minimize spider attractants. By helping to prevent other pest populations from getting out of hand, you can help reduce the likelihood that spiders will take interest in your home. This can be achieved by implementing simple exclusion tactics like sealing cracks and crevices, eliminating gaps around doors and windows, and using a screen door. On going pest maintenance will also help with early detection as well as implement residual pesticide applications to help reduce pest populations.

Spider FAQs

  • How does pest control get rid of spiders?

All in One Pest Control uses a combination of effective spider treatment strategies to help reduce and eliminate spider populations. Spiders can be kept under control by implementing local spot treatment in addition to an exterior spray to help reduce bug populations.

  • Does spraying for spiders work?

Local spot treatment can target active spiders in their webs. If direct contact is made with the spider, the pesticides will be effective. Residual sprays are less effective on spiders, but they are effective on their prey. Residual pesticide applications will help kill off many of the other bugs that will come into contact with an exterior application of pesticides.

  • How do you get rid of spiders permanently?

On going spider control maintenance is typically required to ensure that spiders stay gone for good. On going treatment and monitoring will help alert for new spider activity as well as prevent spider problems from exploding into a full-blown infestation if they arise.
